More B-Champs Info! new! posted July 14, 2010
If you are swimming at B-Champs, please check your B-Champs events which are posted at the pool. B-Champs will be held at the Kingsgate Royals Pool (where our Tuesday meet was) this Saturday, July 17th. Swimmers must be at the pool by 7:55 AM! Since other teams have a warm up time earlier than ours, parking may be a challenge, so please plan accordingly. If possible, please sit near other Marlins families to make it easier for the coaches to find swimmers.
Warm-ups are from 8:25 to 8:45. Each age group will get a lane. B-Champs is a long and fun meet, so bring tents, blankets, pop-ups, food, water, board games, etc. The expected end time is 3:00PM. The concession stand will be serving breakfast from 7:00-10:00 and lunch from 11:00-3:00.
Swimmers should listen for the announcers to call their event. Swimmers go up very early and are "staged" before their race, meaning someone puts them in the right spot and they are able to relax before their race. The "clerk of course" is where you should send your swimmer.
REMEMBER: YOUR SWIMMER MUST BE AT THE POOL BY 7:55 AM! This is absolutely essential. The coaches go to a scratch meeting at 8:15, when every swimmer who is not yet accounted for is taken completely out of the meet. This means they may not swim a single race. No matter what time your swimmer's first event is, you must still be at the pool by 7:55 (this includes 15 and overs who drive themselves!)
If you need more information, there is a packet posted on the bulletin board including a map of their facility. It is going to be a really wonderful meet and we're looking forward to seeing how well the Marlins swim! Good luck!

The annual Marlin mile swim is scheduled for this Friday, July 9th. Please see the volunteer sign up sheet as a reminder of what you have signed up for. If you have not yet volunteered, please see the sign up sheet and let Suzy Lowry know how you can help.
If you have not picked up your pledge envelope, Suzy will have them at this week's meets and also at the mile swim.
As a reminder, the kids will swim 1 mile during practice time in lieu of their regular work out. The goal is to swim a mile, but the swimmers can swim as many laps as they can – especially for the 8 & unders! The swimmers can get flat-rate pledges or pledge by the lap. Please note that work out times will be different to allow the younger kids more time to complete the mile swim. They will be as follows:
- 7:00-7:30: 14 & Under
- 7:30-8:00: 15 & Over
- 8:00-9:15: 8 & Under
- 9:15-10:30: 10 & Under
- 10:30-11:15: 12 & Under
This year our goal is to raise money to help rebuild out snack shack!! We have some great incentives this year! The swimmers that earn the highest dollar amount in 3 different age categories will each get a $25 Target Gift Card. We will also be holding a raffle for a $100 Target Gift Card! Each swimmer will get a raffle ticket for every $25 they pledge over the $25 suggested minimum. We will do the drawing at the end of season team picnic.
Pledges are due at the last home meet on July 15th. This is our primary fund raiser this year so let's go all out for the team!
A/B Champs Info! updated! posted July 5, 2010
Entries need to be turned in soon for B-champs, so next Monday and Tuesday swimmers will be choosing their top three events to swim and entries will be posted Monday, July 12th. If you are out of town, please e-mail your child's choices if you are able. These are not guaranteed events, but it will give the coaches an idea of what everyone would like to swim. A swimmer can swim a maximum of three events at B-champs - three individual events, two individual events and a relay, or an individual event and two relays.
If your swimmer has an "A" time and would like to participate in A-champs, entries for those events are due a bit later. On Monday, July 12th your child will be able to see where he or she ranks among all of the swimmers with A times in the league and we can make our decisions about events at that point. If your child has an A time, it is not required that he or she swim at A champs. Your swimmer can still swim at B champs in other events. If you are unable to attend B champs on Saturday, July 17th, please email the marlins by MONDAY, JULY 5TH AT 11AM.
Kim George will be organizing our B-Champs volunteers. About 20 volunteers from the Marlins are needed for B-Champs. This volunteering is in addition to the regular season commitment.

Marlins Scholarship Applications Available! posted June 28, 2010
The 2010 Maple Hills Marlins Scholarship Program Application is available here. Current Marlins who have graduated from high school and are accepted into and will be attending an accredited college or university in the fall of this current year are eligible to apply. Applicants must have a minimum high school GPA of 2.5. To be considered, submit three copies of your application with the cover page (original only) in a sealed envelope, and include a copy of your last high school report card or transcript (unofficial is fine). By 5 p.m. on Monday, July 19 when your application has been completed, please contact Marcy Rand, Scholarship Committee Chair, at 425-227-8393 or ograymar@msn.com to arrange to turn in your application package. Please also contact Marcy if you have questions as you complete your application.
The Maple Hills Marlins Swim Team Board has chosen to operate a scholarship program for the following reasons:
- The scholarship program provides an incentive for parents and students alike to consider sticking with the swim team into their high school years when the commitment becomes more difficult due to schedule conflicts, active social lives, and apathy.
- Our older kids contribute to the team by working with the younger students, serving as Big Buddies, etc., and we want to reward that effort. It says a great deal to teenagers when adults are willing to acknowledge their efforts and invest in them as individuals.
- Our scholarship program demonstrates the Club’s strong commitment to kids and community, in addition to competition.

Special note to 15 and Over parents: Please make sure your swimmer is honoring their commitment to the swim team! We have been missing many of them at practices or they have been late and it's very frustrating to the coaches and the other swimmers who have made a point to be on time. Thank you!

Our meets next week are against Norwood. Tuesday we are home and Thursday we are at Norwood. We have not swam against them in recent memory, so let's make sure that we leave them with a great impression of Division III and treat them with a lot of respect and practice good sportsmanship!

If you do not tell us by Friday morning, your swimmer will not be able to swim in one of the meets the following week. Practice 5/28 cancelled posted May 27, 2010
Practice tomorrow, May 28th, has been cancelled. The pool is, unfortunately, not quite ready to open yet as the temperature is a very chilly 66 degrees and the chemicals haven't had a chance to stabilize. Because of this and the weather forecast for tomorrow, we have decided that a dryland practice won't be particularly effective for the swimmers. We are so sorry for all of the confusion but we will see you in the pool on Tuesday, June 1st. We hope everyone has a wonderful Memorial Day weekend.
Parents, as soon as you know dates for swim meet that your swimmers are missing, let Coach Dani know either on deck or by e-mail so she can mark them on her charts!

The coaches have put together some great workouts that will benefit all swimmers prior to actually entering the water.
